How a Board Game Inspired A Painting
Art Of The Chill
❄️ Winter With Bob – A Cold Winter, A Warm Memory
Not every painting starts with a brush—some begin with a person. Winter With Bob was born out of memory, true friendship, and the quiet kind of beauty you only find in a frozen landscape.
My lifelong friend and our obsession with a very fun Bob Ross board game, The Art of the Chill. I was inspired one long Wisconsin winter, playing the game while watching The Joy of Painting at the same time and yelling obscenities at Bob trying to beat him in the game. So fun!
🎨 The Process
This piece is created with soft whites, faded grays, and delicate blues. I worked in layers—first letting the cold sky come through in cool washes, then adding the clouds with soft, gentle dry brushing. I used a palette knife to create the mountaints and to reflect the rough textures of ice and stone. Multitudes of tiny brush strokes were made to create the trees, foliage and reflections.
I didn’t paint Bob exactly—he’s not in the scene—but his spirit is there.
🌬 Why It Matters
Winter With Bob isn’t just about a game and painting—it’s about connection. How love of fun and nature can bring the minds & hearts together of the people we quietly love.
We live fast. But this painting was joyfully created slowly. And I think we need more of that. -KZabler
